In collaboration with the Forks Chamber of Commerce, this guidebook was especially written for Twilight fans who want an insider’s photo-illustrated guide to the small town in Washington State that novelist Stephenie Meyer put on the literary map.
Twilight Tours: the Illustrated Guide to the REAL Forks, written by George Beahm, with the Forks Chamber of Commerce • 112 pages • full color throughout • 8x10 inches • sewn signatures (not the usual, cheap glue binding!) • $11.95 paperback • $19.95 hardback • by pop culture writer George Beahm • In bookstores nationwide on August 1, 2009. (In Forks, please patronize our affiliates—the Forks Chamber of Commerce and the wonderful retail store, Dazzled by Twilight.)
This is the trade hardback edition, which will not be reprinted. As of July 1, 2009, over half of the available copies have been sold to distributors and wholesalers. The publisher estimates that this edition will sell out first and be unavailable by the end of July--so order now to avoid disappointment. You can pre-order it from Amazon.com and get a substantial discount: $13.57. (The retail price is $19.95).
This is the trade PAPERBACK EDITION. It is virtually identical to the hardback edition. The covers are printed on heavy stock and laminated and the binding (sewn signatures) will guarantee that the book will hold up under repeated readings. In full color throughout, this is available as a preorder from Amazon.com for $9.56. (The book retails for $11.95).
Wrote Stephenie Meyer on her website, “Forks is a real place and I was there!” In her short piece, she explained that “Being in Forks was the most incredible experience. ... The word surreal gets overused a lot, but this really was like walking around inside of a dream.”
Meyer has made three trips to Forks and one to Port Angeles, where she visited Bella Italia, the restaurant where, in Twilight, Bella and Edward share a romantic dinner—their first date.
Curiously, Hollywood has not filmed Forks for their movie adaptations of Twilight or New Moon, so first-time fans not familiar with the books and not knowing any better, think they’re seeing Forks. Well, they’re not. They’re seeing, mostly, Oregon and Canada.
The readers who love the books, though, come to Forks because that’s where the reader can step, as Meyer put it, walk around inside of a dream. Her dream. One that took her from obscurity to international fame and fortune—a success story of a genuinely nice person who seems unaffected by the brouhaha surrounding her.
This book, written with the full cooperation of the Forks Chamber of Commerce, showcases the small town that remains at the essential heart of the Twilight novels. To fully appreciate what Meyer has done with her Twilight series, go to Forks and then read the books, and the scenes she writes will resonate with authenticity.
I spent four days in Forks and had a great time. I only wish I could have stayed longer.
For those of you who have never been to Forks, and may never get to Forks, this book is principally a visual guide with approximately 100 full color photographs; half of them taken by me and the other half taken by Mike Gurling of the Forks Chamber of Commerce. (Mike is a former National Park Ranger and is also a Twilight expert—far more than me.)
Welcome to Forks. It’s my kind of town—and, I hope, yours, too.
